After connecting, don’t pitch immediately

A lot of people make this mistake:

They connect →

The person accepts →

Within 30 seconds they send:

“Hi, can you refer me?”

It feels transactional.

Even if your profile is good, it puts pressure on the other person.

Most professionals ignore these messages not because they’re rude —

but because they don’t know you yet.

What to do instead-

Treat LinkedIn like a low-context environment.

When someone accepts your connection, that doesn’t mean they know:

 your background

 your skill level

 your seriousness

So your first goal is comfort, not referral.

Step 1: Send a light acknowledgment

Something simple:

“Thanks for connecting.”

Or if relevant:

“Thanks for connecting — I’ve been following your team’s work.”

That’s it.

No ask.

Step 2: Create small familiarity

Over the next few days:

 Like one relevant post

 Leave one thoughtful comment

 Or ask one genuine question

Nothing forced. Just normal interaction.

This builds recognition.

When your name appears again, it’s not random.

Step 3: Then ask, clearly and politely

Now if you message:

“I recently applied for ___ role. If you’re comfortable, I’d appreciate any advice or referral.”

It feels natural.

Not cold.

Why this works-

People don’t mind helping.

They mind being used immediately.

A small delay:

 reduces pressure

 increases reply rate

 improves tone

It also makes you look mature and patient.

Important balance:

Don’t over-warm it either.

You’re not trying to become friends.

2–3 interactions is enough.
