A small job-search trick that helps you avoid sending the wrong resume
Many people apply to several roles using the exact same resume.
The skills may match, but sometimes the emphasis is slightly wrong for that particular role.
A simple trick before applying is to do a 30-second keyword scan of the job description.
Open the job description and quickly notice which words appear repeatedly.
For example, a backend role might repeat things like:
– APIs
– scalability
– microservices
– database performance
Another backend role might repeat:
– integrations
– internal tools
– automation
– data pipelines
Even though both roles are technically similar, the team is likely focused on different kinds of work.
Now open your resume and look at the top half of the first page.
Ask yourself:
If someone only reads this section, will they see those same themes?
You don’t need to rewrite the entire resume.
Often a small adjustment is enough.
For example:
– Move the most relevant project slightly higher
– Reword one bullet to highlight the type of problem mentioned in the description
– Make sure the tools or systems they emphasize appear clearly in your recent experience
This small alignment step takes only a couple of minutes.
But it helps your application look more connected to what the team is actually working on.
Many applications are rejected not because the candidate lacks the skill, but because the resume doesn’t clearly reflect the type of work the team described.
When the top half of your resume mirrors the focus of the role, the reader can more easily picture where you might fit.
