Practical Interview Advice for Tech Job Seekers (What Actually Helps)

  1. Pick 3 Stories Before Every Interview

Don’t try to remember everything you’ve done.

Before the interview, write down:

  • One problem you fixed

  • One thing you built from scratch

  • One thing that broke and you handled it

That’s it.

Most questions (“tell me about your project”, “challenges”, “debugging”, “system design light”) can be answered using these 3 stories.

It keeps you grounded instead of scrambling.

  1. When Explaining Code, Start With Why, Not Tools

Interviewers don’t struggle with syntax. They struggle with unclear thinking.

Instead of:

“I used React, Redux, Node, MongoDB…”

Say:

“We needed faster page loads and better state handling, so I moved logic into reusable components and managed state centrally.”

Tools come after the reasoning.

  1. If You’re Stuck on a Question, Say This First

This line helps more than people realise:

“Let me think this through step by step.”

Then:

  • Say your assumptions

  • Say what you’d check first

  • Say what you’d do next

Even if you don’t reach the perfect answer, you show how you work — which is often the real evaluation.

  1. For DSA / Coding Rounds: Talk While You Code

Silence makes interviewers nervous.

As you code:

  • Explain your approach

  • Mention time/space complexity

  • Say when you’re unsure and correcting

They want to see problem-solving, not just the final code.
