A simple job-search trick to know if your resume is easy to read

Here’s a quick test you can try with your resume.

Open it and zoom out until the entire page fits on your screen.

Don’t read the words.

Just look at the shape of the page.

This sounds strange, but it reveals something important.

When recruiters scan resumes, they first see the visual structure, not the details.

If the page looks like a large block of text, it feels heavy to read.

If the page has clear spacing and short lines, it feels easier to process.

You can improve this without changing your experience at all.

Check for these small things:

– Are your bullet points longer than two lines?

– Do multiple bullets describe different ideas in the same line?

– Is there enough space between sections?

Often the fix is simple.

Split long bullets into shorter ones.

Remove unnecessary filler words.

Keep each bullet focused on one idea.

For example:

Instead of:

“Developed backend APIs and optimized database queries while also fixing bugs and working with the team to deploy features.”

You could write:

– Built backend APIs for the payments module

– Optimized slow database queries

– Fixed user-reported bugs and supported deployments

The work hasn’t changed.

But the page now looks easier to read.

When a resume feels lighter and clearer, people are more likely to read it carefully instead of skimming past it.

Sometimes improving readability has a bigger impact than adding more information.
