A quick cold email check before you hit send

A lot of cold emails go unread because the first line looks generic in the inbox preview.

Most email clients show only the first 40–60 characters of the message.

If that preview says something like:

“Hi, my name is ___ and I’m reaching out regarding opportunities…”

it blends in with dozens of other messages.

Before sending a cold email, check what the first sentence looks like in preview.

Open your draft and ask:

If someone only reads the first line, does it give them a reason to open the email?

For example, compare these two openings.

Generic preview:

“Hi, I hope you’re doing well. My name is Rahul and I’m a software engineer…”

More informative preview:

“I recently applied for the Backend Engineer role on your team and had one quick question.”

The second line immediately gives context.

The reader knows:

– why you’re writing

– which role you’re referring to

No guessing required.

This doesn’t require rewriting the whole email.

Just make sure the first sentence clearly explains the reason for the message.

Cold emails are often decided at the preview stage, not after the message is opened.
