Before applying, check this one thing
When you see a job posting, most people immediately check the requirements.
Java? Yes.
SQL? Yes.
2 years experience? Close enough.
Then they apply.
But there’s one small detail that quietly affects your chances:
Look at how the job is described in the first 3 lines.
Is it framed as:
– Building new systems?
– Maintaining existing ones?
– Working with clients?
– Supporting internal teams?
That opening description tells you what the team actually needs right now.
Now look at your resume.
Does your top project match that type of work?
For example:
If the job says:
“Looking for someone to maintain and improve existing backend services…”
But your first project only talks about building something from scratch,
you’re misaligned — even if your skills match.
Before applying, reorder your resume slightly.
Move the most relevant project or responsibility to the top.
Highlight the part that matches their immediate need.
You don’t need a new resume every time.
You just need to adjust what they see first.
Hiring decisions are often made in the first 20 seconds.
Make those 20 seconds work in your favor.
