A LinkedIn check most people skip before applying

Before applying to a role, try looking at one section on LinkedIn that many people ignore.

The “People” tab on the company page.

Go to the company’s LinkedIn page.

Click People.

Then type the role you’re targeting in the search bar there.

For example:

“Backend Engineer”

“Data Analyst”

“Product Manager”

Now look at the employees who appear.

You can learn a lot in a few minutes:

– How experienced people in that role usually are

– What their previous roles looked like

– Which skills appear repeatedly

– Whether most hires came from startups, large companies, or specific domains

Sometimes the job description is broad, but the team profile shows a clearer pattern.

For example, if most people in that role mention APIs and system design, highlighting that work in your profile becomes more important.

If many of them moved from internal tooling or data-heavy roles, that tells you what the team values in practice.

This quick check doesn’t require rewriting your whole resume.

It just helps you understand how similar candidates are presenting their work before you apply.

A few minutes of observation can often give better direction than guessing what the team is looking for.
