Mentioning a Mutual Connection Helps — Even Without Asking for a Referral

Most people think networking only works if you ask directly for a referral.
That’s not true.

Sometimes, simply mentioning a mutual connection is enough to get your message read.

Why this works:

When someone sees a familiar name, two things happen:

  • You stop being a stranger

  • Your message feels safer to open

It creates context, not obligation.

How to do it the right way:

1. Mention the connection naturally
No big build-up. No forcing it.
Example:

“I noticed we’re both connected to ___.”

That’s it.

2. Don’t immediately ask for a referral
Jumping straight to “Can you refer me?” puts pressure on the reader.

Instead:

  • Ask for guidance

  • Ask for clarity about the role

  • Ask if your background seems relevant

3. Use the connection as context, not leverage
You’re not saying “They know me, so help me.”
You’re saying “We’re in the same professional circle.”

4. Keep the message short
Long messages defeat the purpose.
One connection + one relevant skill + one simple ask.

5. Even weak connections help
It doesn’t need to be:

  • A close friend

  • A direct manager

  • Someone senior

A shared ex-company, college, or community is enough.

This approach works because it feels human, not transactional.

You’re starting a conversation —
not asking for a favour.

Why AI Isn’t Replacing Affiliate Marketing After All

“AI will make affiliate marketing irrelevant.”

Our research shows the opposite.

Shoppers use AI to explore options, but they trust creators, communities, and reviews before buying. With less than 10 percent clicking AI links, affiliate content now shapes both conversions and AI recommendations.

All the best for today’s applications — apply smart, not everywhere.

Best,

TechUprise
