Before you send your resume anywhere…
Remove every vague word that doesn’t really tell the recruiter what you can do.
Words like:
“Good understanding of…”
“Basic knowledge of…”
“Familiar with…”
“Worked on…”
“Participated in…”
“Responsible for…”
These lines sound safe, but they’re too generic. They don’t help the recruiter imagine your actual skill level.
Instead, replace them with tiny, real examples that show what you’ve actually done — even if it was a small project, college task, or personal practice.
Here’s how to rewrite them with simple specifics:
Instead of: “Good understanding of Python”
Write:
“Used Python to write scripts for scraping and data cleaning.”
Instead of: “Basic knowledge of React”
Write:
“Built a simple React app with routing, forms, and API calls.”
Instead of: “Familiar with SQL”
Write:
“Wrote basic SQL queries for filtering, joining, and aggregating data.”
Why this works:
You’re not bragging, you’re not exaggerating — you’re just being specific. And specific always feels more confident and believable than vague statements.
A recruiter doesn’t need long explanations.
They just want to know:
• what you touched,
• what you built,
• and what you understand through real use.
Even small examples make your resume feel real.
Here are a few more rewrites you can use:
Instead of: “Worked on frontend”
Write:
“Built the UI for two pages and connected them with API responses.”
Instead of: “Participated in a machine learning project”
Write:
“Trained a basic text classification model and tested it on sample data.”
Instead of: “Responsible for backend tasks”
Write:
“Created APIs for authentication and user data.”
Notice how all of these are still short.
You’re not writing essays.
You’re just being clear.
Take 10 minutes today and fix 3–4 lines like this.
Your resume will instantly look sharper, more grounded, and far more trustworthy.
Small change — big difference.
