The 2-Minute Tweak That Changes Everything

You know what most people do when they see a new job opening? They hit apply instantly. No pause, no research — just a resume, a click, and hope.

And that’s exactly why so many good candidates never get noticed.

Here’s something I’ve learned after talking to dozens of students and early professionals over the past year:

the ones who actually get callbacks almost always do one simple thing differently — they personalize their application, even if it’s just one line.

I remember one of the students in my Telegram group — let’s call her Neha. She applied for a Data Analyst internship at a fintech startup. Instead of sending a generic “I’m interested” email, she took a few minutes to check the company’s LinkedIn page.

She found out they had recently built a dashboard for transaction analytics. In her email, she mentioned,

“I saw you recently launched a dashboard for real-time transactions — I built something similar during college using Excel and SQL. Would love to bring that experience to your team.”

Guess what? She got a reply the same day.

Not because she had a fancy resume — she didn’t.

But because she showed curiosity. She showed she cared enough to do her homework.

That’s it. That’s the difference.

So before you apply for your next role this week — take two minutes to look up the company.

Check their website, see what product they’re building, maybe even scroll through the hiring manager’s recent LinkedIn posts.

Then, mention one genuine thing you liked or noticed.

It could be something as simple as:

“I really liked how your app uses gamification to encourage savings — I’d love to work on something that impacts user behavior like this.”

This one extra sentence adds personality to your application. It’s like saying, “I actually know who I’m writing to.”

And in a world where recruiters read hundreds of copy-paste applications every day, that effort stands out more than you think.

So try this small change this week. Slow down before hitting “apply.” Read, reflect, and personalize.

It takes two minutes — but it could be the reason you finally get that ‘We’d love to interview you’ email.

You’ll be surprised how often it works.
