Referrals work best when people know what you actually do
Let me say this simply.
When you ask someone for a referral and they don’t really know you, it puts them in an awkward spot. Not because they don’t want to help, but because they don’t know what they’re putting their name behind.
Most people are okay helping when they have some idea of your work.
That doesn’t mean you need to build a long relationship. Even a small bit of context helps.
For example:
you mention a project you worked on
you explain what kind of roles you’re aiming for
you ask one genuine question about their work
That’s often enough.
What usually doesn’t work is connecting and immediately asking for a referral. It feels rushed and impersonal, and most people quietly ignore it.
A better way is to first talk like a normal person. Share what you’re working on. Say why their role or company caught your attention. Keep it short and honest.
When someone understands what you do, asking for a referral later doesn’t feel like a favour — it feels reasonable.
Referrals aren’t about pressure.
They’re about familiarity.
And familiarity comes from small, human interactions — not perfect messages.
