Keep your “Open to Work” visible to recruiters only.
When people start job hunting, one of the first things they do is turn on the green “Open to Work” banner.
It feels like you’re announcing to the world: I’m available.
And that’s okay — but it’s not always the smartest move.
What most people don’t realise is that recruiters don’t find candidates through banners.
They find them through filters, keywords, job titles, skills, experience levels, and location.
So you don’t actually need the banner to be visible to everyone.
Why “recruiters only” works better:
Recruiters still see you.
When you select “Recruiters only,” your profile still appears in recruiter searches.
Nothing is hidden from them.
Your profile looks more composed.
Fair or unfair, perception matters.
A recruiter scrolling LinkedIn sees hundreds of profiles.
A calm, professional-looking profile often feels more “stable” than one shouting availability.
You avoid unwanted messages.
Public banners attract a lot of noise — spam, low-quality roles, MLMs, and irrelevant DMs.
Recruiter-only visibility keeps things more focused.
It helps if you’re currently working.
If you’re employed and casually exploring, this is the safest option.
Your network doesn’t need to know — recruiters do.
When should you use the public banner?
The public banner can help if:
You’re a fresher with no network yet
You’re actively posting content and engaging
You’re okay with all kinds of DMs
But even then, results mostly come from profile quality, not the banner.
What actually matters more than the banner
Clear headline (role + skills)
Updated experience or projects
Relevant keywords
Clean profile summary
Recent activity (likes, comments, posts)
Think of “Open to Work” as a signal, not a solution.
How to set it correctly-
LinkedIn → Profile → Open to Work
Choose “Recruiters only”
Select roles, locations, and job types

That’s it.
