A cold email trick that makes replies easier
A small mistake in cold emails is asking something that takes effort to answer.
For example:
“Can you review my resume?”
“Can you refer me?”
“Can we schedule a call?”
All of these require time and decision-making.
When someone is busy, it’s easier to ignore the message than to think through it.
Instead, try ending your email with a low-effort question.
Something that can be answered in one line.
For example:
“Does your team usually prefer candidates with system design experience for this role?”
or
“Is this role more focused on new features or maintaining existing systems?”
or
“Would you recommend applying through the careers page or waiting for a referral?”
These questions are:
– specific
– easy to answer
– directly related to their experience
Once someone replies, the conversation opens naturally.
You can then continue the discussion or share more about your background.
Cold emails work better when the first step is small.
The easier it is to reply, the more likely you are to get a response.
