A cold DM rule that saves you from being ignored

Before sending a cold DM, check one thing:

When was this person last active?

If someone hasn’t posted, commented, or changed roles in 6–8 months, your message is likely to sit unread.

Not because they’re ignoring you.

Because they’re not active.

Instead of messaging randomly, do this:

1. Open their profile.

2. Check their recent activity.

3. If they’ve liked, commented, or posted in the last 2–3 weeks — message them.

4. If they haven’t been active in months — skip and find another person.

This alone improves reply rates more than rewriting your message ten times.

Another practical filter:

Prefer people who:

– Joined the company in the last 1–3 years

– Are in the same role you’re targeting

– Are not senior directors or VPs

Very senior people get flooded.

Mid-level engineers or team leads reply more often.

Cold DMs are not about perfect wording.

They’re about messaging the right person at the right time.

Targeting > scripting.
