Why “etc.” and vague endings quietly hurt your resume
“etc.” is one of the fastest ways to lose clarity on a resume.
Not because recruiters hate the word — but because it signals unfinished thinking.
When someone reads:
“Worked on APIs, databases, deployment, etc.”
“Handled frontend features, bug fixes, etc.”
Their brain pauses and asks:
What exactly did you handle?
Was it core work or side work?
Should I trust this line?
That pause is enough to move on.
Here’s the fix — without adding length:
Replace “etc.” with a boundary.
Boundaries feel complete.
Instead of:
“Worked on backend tasks like APIs, database design, etc.”
Write:
“Worked on backend tasks including API creation and database schema updates”
Same space.
More confidence.
Another option:
Replace “etc.” with one representative example.
Instead of:
“Improved performance, scalability, etc.”
Write:
“Improved performance by reducing unnecessary API calls”
You’re not listing everything.
You’re proving you know what mattered.
If you truly did many things:
Pick the one that best matches the role
Let the rest go
Resumes aren’t honesty tests.
They’re relevance filters.
Final check:
Every line should feel finished
No trailing dots, no “etc.”, no “and more”
When a line ends cleanly, the reader’s mind moves forward smoothly.
That smoothness is underrated — and powerful.
