Most job seekers don’t struggle because…
of lack of skills — they struggle because they apply randomly and look exactly like everyone else.
Instead of mass applying to 100–200 jobs, focus on being targeted and intentional.
Start by picking specific roles, not broad ones. Don’t just apply to “Software Engineer” everywhere. Narrow it down to something like “React Intern (startup)” or “Backend Node.js Intern.” This immediately reduces competition and helps you align better with what companies actually want.
Next, stop depending only on job portals. Build a list of 20–30 companies that are actively hiring and match your skills. These can be startups, companies that posted in the last few days, or teams you genuinely find interesting. When you focus on fewer companies, you can go deeper instead of being just another applicant in a huge pool.
Then comes the most important shift — show proof instead of just claiming skills. If a role mentions a requirement, try to demonstrate it. Even a small project built in 1–2 days, a case study, or a practical example can make a big difference. Recruiters don’t trust keywords; they trust evidence.
When you reach out, avoid generic messages like “I’m interested in this role.” Instead, send a short, value-based message. Mention the role, highlight something relevant you’ve done, and if possible, add a small idea or observation about their product or work. This shows effort, thinking, and genuine interest — which most candidates lack.
Also, track your applications and follow up after 2–3 days. A lot of opportunities are lost simply because people don’t follow up, while recruiters often miss initial messages.
The key shift is simple: don’t try to apply more — try to apply smarter, with relevance and proof.
10 well-targeted, thoughtful applications will always outperform 200 random ones.
