The Power of Following Up (Without Being Pushy)

I see so many people apply for jobs and then… wait.

They send their resume, maybe fill out a form, and then just keep refreshing their inbox every few hours.

And when no one replies, they quietly assume, “I probably wasn’t good enough.”

But honestly, most of the time, your application wasn’t even rejected.

It just got lost somewhere — recruiters are juggling dozens of open roles, and hundreds of applications pile up faster than you think.

That’s why following up can actually make a difference.

It’s not being pushy — it’s showing that you genuinely care about the role.

A few weeks ago, someone from my community applied for an internship at a small startup. After a week of silence, he sent a simple LinkedIn message to the hiring manager:

“Hey [Name], I applied for the Software Intern role last week. I really liked what your team is building, especially the new [feature/product]. I just wanted to let you know I’m still very interested if you’re still reviewing applications.”

That’s it. No begging, no long essay.

The next day, he got a reply.

The recruiter said, “Thanks for reminding me — I’ll check your application.”

Two days later, he got an interview.

Sometimes it’s really that simple. You just have to remind them you exist.

So if you’ve applied somewhere and haven’t heard back, pick one recruiter or hiring manager and send a quick message.

Keep it short, polite, and specific. Something like:

“Hi [Name], I applied for [Role] recently. I really admire [something you liked about their product/team]. Just wanted to check if the position is still open.”

You’ll be surprised how often this works.

Most people don’t follow up — so the few who do, instantly stand out.

And even if they don’t reply, that’s okay. You showed initiative. You put yourself out there. That’s what counts.

So this week — don’t just apply and wait.

Follow up once.

That one small step might be the reason your name lands back on the shortlist.

All the best for today’s applications — apply smart, not everywhere.

Best,

TechUprise
