One resume check most people never do

There’s a simple test you can run on your resume that reveals a lot.

Open it.

Now hide your name, education, and skills section.

Read only your experience bullets.

Ask yourself:

If someone removed the company names, would it still be clear what kind of work I did?

Many resumes rely heavily on brand names.

At Big Company X

At Startup Y

But the bullets themselves are vague.

“Worked on feature enhancements.”

“Contributed to backend services.”

If the company name disappeared, the work would look generic.

Your bullets should stand on their own.

Instead of leaning on the company’s reputation, show the nature of the work:

– What system were you handling?

– What part did you own?

– What kind of problems did you solve repeatedly?

Even small clarity changes help:

“Handled API logic for the payments module.”

“Maintained internal reporting dashboards used by the operations team.”

Now the work has shape.

A strong resume doesn’t depend on the company name to feel credible.

It explains the work clearly enough that the reader understands your role without context.

Try this test once.

If your bullets feel empty without brand support, rewrite them.
