Stop trying to “stand out” — fit in first, then stand out slightly.
Most candidates try too hard to be unique:
• Fancy resumes
• Over-creative projects
• Over-explaining everything
But if you don’t first match what the role expects, you get rejected before your uniqueness even matters.
First step is simple: look like a clear fit.
If it’s a backend role:
• Show backend projects
• Use the same tech stack mentioned
• Highlight relevant experience at the top
Make the recruiter feel:
“This person fits what we asked for.”
Then add a small edge:
• A cleaner project than others
• Better explanation
• One extra relevant idea or improvement
That’s enough.
If you skip the “fit” part and jump to “standing out,” you confuse recruiters.
And confused = rejected.
Most people either blend in completely or try too hard.
