A Project Tip Most Candidates Miss (and Interviewers Notice)

Before an interview, spend 15 quiet minutes doing just this for each project you plan to mention:

Write down where your project felt uncomfortable.

Not the highlights.

Not the tech stack.

The uncomfortable parts.

For example:

  • Something didn’t work the first time

  • You were confused about an approach

  • You made a decision you weren’t fully sure about

  • You had to fix something last minute

In interviews, follow-up questions almost always go toward:

  • “Why did you choose this?”

  • “What would you change?”

  • “What was challenging here?”

If you’ve already reflected on these moments, your answers come out calm and natural, not defensive or vague.

A simple way to answer project questions:

Instead of trying to sound impressive, just say:

“This part was tricky for me at first. I tried X, it didn’t work well, so I switched to Y.”

This sounds honest.

And honest answers are easier to trust.

Interviewers aren’t expecting perfect projects.

They’re listening for self-awareness.

If you can talk about your work without pretending it was flawless, you already stand out.
